Backing up your data is a practice that we at Quest, of course, live by. But safe computing doesn't end with backup; it also includes some common sense habits that can protect your personal files, and keep your hardware and software in good health longer.
• Use both hardware and software utilities for data security, such as firewalls and virus protection. Be sure they are up-to-date.
• Scan incoming data, including packaged software, for viruses.
• Use proper ventilation to keep servers at the proper operating temperature.
• Avoid static discharge when handling media, such as external hard drives. This is especially important when in excessively dry environments.
• When moving computers, be sure to power down properly and take care to set the computer down gently.
• Never upgrade any system without first verifying your backup.
Protecting important files that you've stored on laptops, external hard drives and thumb drives is not hard; it just takes a little common sense.
