Nigeria’s Oga Taxi unveils new app, integrates Splyt global roaming API

Oga Taxi, a Nigerian community focused taxi app has announced the launch of a brand new ride-hailing app, featuring social ride-pooling which allows passengers know who they’re riding with.

Launched in 2014, Oga Taxi aims to make movement of people within Nigeria quick, safe and convenient. It operates a system that provides equitable fare rates for both the passenger and driver.

Last year, the startup increased its fleet, launching 50 brand new cars. This was to ensure its customers or “Oga Members” always find rides to their location. It is currently operational in Lagos, Abuja and Rivers.

The startup had been planning to introduce pooled rides and at the same time address the major problem it faced; passengers not knowing who they’re pool-riding with. The new app addresses this.

The new app comes with a completely re-imagined user interface and allows passengers to choose between a classic (solo) and a pooled ride, with the latter guaranteeing a discount of up to 40 percent.

If opting for a pooled ride, users get to choose with whom they will ride, with the app’s sophisticated matching algorithm suggesting profiles of people going roughly the same way.

“We wanted to introduce pooled rides and at the same time address the most common problem with them, which is that passengers do not know who their fellow passenger will be. By introducing social ride-pooling we hope to address this issue, and finally give passengers choice,” said Michael Nnamadim, CEO of Oga Taxi.

Developed by Splyt, a London-based startup known for developing technological solutions for ride-hailing companies all over the world, the new app also supports Splyt global roaming API that enables cross-bookings between companies using the API.

This feature allows Oga Taxi’s users who find themselves outside the country to still book rides right from the app with the ride operated by another ride hailing service that also supports Splyt global roaming API.

In the same vein, users of other apps who are in Nigeria will be able to book a ride directly through their local app and have their ride operated by Oga Taxi.

With this new features, Oga Taxi is looking to expand into new areas in the country. The startup is now actively attracting drivers in Abuja, Lagos and Port-Harcourt with more cities in Nigeria to come soon.
