PROTECTING YOUR GADGETS FROM KIDS – 5 TIPS FROM QUEST

Most families have a computer or tablet that holds every photograph, school project and tax return. But mixing electronics with toddlers may be a recipe for disaster.  Fortunately, the QUEST team has pulled together some tips on how to protect your files from accidents caused by the little ones.

    • Watch out for Cords. Let’s face it: kids are not known for their mobile stability. Put dangling wires and cords in the picture and falls are bound to happen. Today’s computers come with magnetic, break-away power cables, but what about printer or ethernet cables?  If you’re not using them, be sure to unplug your laptops, printers and other electronic devices from all power sources, wind them properly and place them on higher ground. This tactic has the added benefit of giving the family pet one less thing to chew on. Don’t forget to cover the outlets, too.

    • Stay Healthy. As viruses and malware become more sophisticated (and confusing), with one accidental click of the mouse, kids unintentionally put the family’s computers at risk. It seems that kids can attract viruses on the computer just as easily as they do in real life. Set up a separate, non-administrator account on your computer for the kids. That way they won’t be able to install or delete anything, but they will still be able to use the computer.  Depending on your children’s ages, you might consider turning on the safe browsing options, too.

    • Protective Gear for your Devices. As parents, we are always on the go, and sometimes have the tendency to leave our electronic devices within reach of young children. By purchasing a computer sleeve, you can help protect your laptop from any scratches and dents that can occur if left on the floor. The good news is there are a TON of protective sleeves available, so you can pick one that fits your personality!

    • Keep an Arm’s Length Away. While the juice bottle might be your child’s best friend, it’s your computer’s worst enemy. Be sure to take note of where your electronics are placed in the house. Double check to make sure nothing electronic is within arm’s reach, because where a hand can go, so can the juice bottle.

    • Don’t Forget to Back Up. The best way to prevent data loss is to back up your computer on a regular basis.  With an automated, cloud-based backup solution like CrashPlan+, your files are always protected.  Whether your little one spilled milk on the computer, or knocked your backup hard drive to the floor while practicing with his lightsaber, you’ll be able to recover your files.
Unfortunately, accidents do happen. When they do, make sure you do NOT power up a device that has obvious physical damage or is making unusual noises. It’s not only bad for the device, but you could also injure yourself. The worst thing you can do is try to repair the machine on your own. By doing so, you may cause further damage. Play it safe, and take your device into an authorized service center. Most places let you call ahead or use their web site to make an appointment, so you don’t have to wait in line when you get there.
