Somalia’s first on-demand taxi hailing service launches

Waryaa Taxi, an on-demand taxi hailing service and the very first in Somalia, has been launched, thereby allowing passengers book taxis from the convenience of their smart phones and PCs.

Modeled after Uber, Waryaa Taxi aims to change the way people move from one place to the other in the country located in the Horn of Africa, where current taxi services lack fixed tariffs and meters, leading to unpredictable fares.

Waryaa Taxi lets passengers book taxis to their various destinations via its app, which was designed to work even when Internet is spotty, the website or via phone calls to the call centre, with a driver assigned to them.

The drivers are licensed, background-checked and have undergone training sessions on the app’s functionalities, features and safety requirements. All their cars are also licensed.

“Waryaa Taxi is a creation of individuals who were tired of overpaying for taxis. They were also concerned about the security of many taxis in the region. Waryaa Taxi is safe, cheap and convenient. The application connects taxi drivers and passengers allowing them to experience a fast, convenient and safe ride, at just a tap of button,” said Omar Kodah, co-founder/CEO of Waryaa Taxi.

Currently, the on-demand taxi hailing service is only available in Hargeisa but will soon be launched in Mogadishu, the country’s capital, and in the Puntland regions in North east Somalia. The startup is looking to partner drivers in main cities to increase its presence, and is fundraising to grow its team and accelerate its growth.

Also, neighbouring countries including Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia will get the service soon. The app (Android version) currently covers all regional languages such as Amharic, Swahili, Somali, English and French.
