440 Wants To Fund Startups in Less Than 24 Hours at Deal Weekend Lagos 2015

Tech startup investment fund, 440, a Joint Venture between Nigeria’s L5Lab and and Kenya’s 88mph has launched Deal Weekend Lagos, a 24-hour event where startups will compete to receive equity-based investment of between $100k and $250k.

Back in 2014 when it launched an accelerator programme, 9 startups who spent three months working with the 440 investment team and mentors received seed investment.

However, the company found that the 3-month programme was daunting for the investors/mentors as they had to juggle their demanding daily business operations alongside mentoring the startups in the accelerator programme.

Hence it decided to launch Deal Weekend to “make it easy for more mature businesses to receive funding, get mentorship advice at the right time for them and continue to focus on their business.”

According to the Nigeria-focused investment fund, at least one deal will be signed within the 24-hour period and “startups will receive mentorship from respected investors in the ecosystem who have all built their own businesses and can give their networks, expertise and funding.”

Some of the seed investors to participate include 88mph’s Kresten Buch, L5Lab’s Chika Nwobi, Twinpine’s Elo Umeh, iROKO’s Bastian Gotter, and LeadPath’s Olumide Soyombo.

The event is scheduled to hold on September 4-5 and startups can apply through its site, until August 13.
