Your computer working slower 5 major reasons to know
Computers have simplified our lives. So, if anything goes wrong
with the computer we are very much disturbed. One of the major problems with
computers is its slow performance. System slowdown is very sore experience for
all computer users. You may start experiencing problems like frequent screen
freezes, alarming blue screen of death, etc. Computer slow performance is not
caused by one single factor but due to a combination of two or more factors-
too many programs running in the background, damaged registry, using older
versions of operating system, less of RAM and so on.
Here, we are going to throw light on five major reasons for the
slow performance of your computer and what you can do to fix them.
1. Too many programs running in the background
Most operating systems support multitasking, but that doesn't mean you can run too many programs at the same time. Remember that each program
you run access some amount of system resources and with too many programs
running at the same time, the resources will be shared too, and your PC
performance slows down.
So it is better to close a few programs to speed up your
computer. To check what applications are running in the background and how much
memory and CPU they are consuming go to the Task Manager or press Ctrl + Alt
+Del keys at the same time. Select any program that you want to remove and
click end task. But these programs are not completely removed and will all
return the next time you start your computer. So, if you want to stop them from
starting when you boot, you need to configure it to not open at the start-up or
remove it from the Programs/Start-up.
If you've installed any antivirus scanner on the computer,
spyware protection program, or other security software make sure the scanning
operation is not running in the background. If the scan is in progress it can
slow down the overall performance of your PC.
2. Fragmented Hard Drive
This is a common problem with all Windows operating systems.
Every time you create new files, install new applications, browse the internet
or perform other activities on your system, data gets added or deleted from the
hard disk. The hard disk functions as a VHS tape, which can store information
in one long stream. When multiple files or programs are stored on the disk,
they are recorded back-to-back. When one item is deleted, a gap is left on the
disk. This space gets occupied by the next file saved to the drive, assuming
the file can completely fill the open space. If the space left is not enough
for the file, it gets stored at the end of the drive. However, if the space
left is enough for the file, chances are there that it may leave some blank
space. Eventually, the quantity and frequency of gaps increase, leaving the
files scattered and separated. This is known as fragmentation which makes your
computer slow as Windows take long time to access the required files which is
scattered all over the hard disk.
To fix this problem, run the Windows hard drive defragmenter at
least once in a month. This tool consolidates scattered files and speed up data
access time. The process may take long time to finish but this will definitely
speed up your computer.
3. Problems with Windows Registry
Registry is the centralized database of your computer. All the
data corresponding to your hardware and software gets stored in your system’s
registry. The registry is used for performing simple task like running a new
program or clicking a mouse. Since it is frequently accessed, it may become
prone to errors. For example, as your system gets older and programs are added
and removed from it, the registry gets loaded with all types of entries. Some
of these may be unwanted, outdated and invalid that causes registry bloating.
Such registry is prone to damages and fragmentation thereby slowing down your
computer.
Running programs like Registry Cleanup can fix the errors of
your registry.
4. Malware, spyware, or virus infections
With the extensive use of computers, parasite programs such as
virus, Trojans, backdoors, spyware and ad-ware have become major threats for
computer users. These parasite programs enter your system through unsecured
internet connections, spam e-mails, infected storage media and others. Once
your computer is infected you may find it difficult to work on your computer.
To secure your system from such malicious programs, you must
install antivirus and anti-spyware on your computer. You must set these
applications to run on a regular basis and also keep them updated to ensure
that you are secured against the latest malware threats.
5. Less RAM
Your system memory may not be enough to support new programs or
high-end software.
It is for this reason you need to upgrade to more of system
memory. For example, the minimum RAM required for Windows 7 is 1 GB.
