How to Install and Uninstall Apps on An Apple Watch

The new Apple Watch offers a number of great features, not the least of which is the ability to run iPhone connected apps on the Watch, allowing users to view information, perform tasks, and even play games directly from their wrists. In this article, we'll walk you through installing an app on your new Apple Watch.

How Do Apps Work on the Apple Watch?

The Apple Watch isn't capable at the moment of running apps on its own. It needs to be connected via Bluetooth to an iPhone. The iPhone does the grunt work of running the app, and crunching the data, while the Apple Watch acts as a window into that data, offering users a convenient way to view information provided by the iPhone.

Apple recently unveiled watchOS 2, which will allow the Apple Watch to run apps all by itself, however the new OS has just now been released for testing to developers, who are learning the ins and outs of the new OS. A fall release of the new operating system will open the doors to a new realm of apps, but until then, users must keep their Watch tethered via Bluetooth to their iPhones.

    Downloading an Apple Watch App

The Apple Watch doesn't have a built-in App Store like the iPhone does, instead Apple Watch apps are components of the iPhone app, and those components are activated via the Watch app on the iPhone after the iPhone app is downloaded from the App Store.

When looking for an app that supports the Apple Watch, simply look in the iOS App Store for apps that include the "Offers Apple Watch App" line that will appear just under the download button for the app.

Once you've found an app that offers Watch support that you'd like to install on your iPhone, simply download it the way you usually download from the App Store. The Apple Watch app will be included as part of the download.

    Installing an Apple Watch App

Once you've downloaded the iPhone app that includes the Apple Watch app, you'll need to open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. The app is named, aptly enough, "Apple Watch," and the app's icon is a side view of an Apple Watch.

Once the Apple Watch app loads, tap "My Watch."

Scroll down in the settings screen until you see the name of the app you downloaded. Tap on the name of the app. Once you're in the app's settings screen, simply tap the toggle switch marked "Show App on Apple Watch" to turn it to the "ON" position, the "Installing..." process will run, copying the needed information to your Watch via Bluetooth.

While you're here, you can decide whether or not to show the app on Glances by toggling the "Show in Glances" switch ON of OFF.

Once the installation process is complete, you'll see the app on your Apple Watch's screen.

    Uninstalling an Apple Watch App

If you decide you want to remove the Apple Watch app from your wrist, the process is quite simple. Load the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Once the app loads, tap "My Watch."

Scroll down in the settings screen until you see the name of the app you want to uninstall from the Watch. Tap on the name of the app. Once you're in the app's settings screen, simply tap the toggle switch marked "Show App on Apple Watch" to turn it to the "OFF" position, the app will be removed from your Apple Watch.

The app will not be removed from your iPhone, so you can reinstall the Apple Watch app any time in the future if you wish to.
